A lively number from the Norwegian group Jazzmob.
For
those of you interested in exploring different ways to arrange a piece
there are lots of ideas here - opening riff from the horns, rhythm
section come in later, straight in to first solo (no build up as such),
back to riff briefly, finally main melody comes in - quite an unusual
structure. Does it work? Do you like it?
In our improvising this session I suggested using some simple pentatonic language (concert C minor pentatonic C Eb F G Bb C
) and interspersing it with some bold 'out of key' notes (not as
fleeting passing notes but sustaining them to maximise their effect!)
The choice of when and where (and indeed whether) to use such notes is
very personal but I think it is useful to have it as a potential
resource in soloing. And so, like all the other techniques, it needs to
be practised.
Many
thanks to Ash for doing such a great job on bass and of course to
Charlie for his fine drumming as ever (I hope you are all signed up to
the Sussex Jazz Mag now!) Good work from everyone this term.
