That's a FAQ. Well the answer is Mark, me (Steve) and Ash. We have a loose policy of not doing old standards. Ash and I will suggest a small pool of tunes which Mark will chose from or he will contribute his own ideas based on what can be taught by them. Several workshop members have commented on learning about new composers. Often who likes which tune can be a surprise.
There are plenty of other workshops in the area that do standards. We don't want to compete with them but also want to offer something that others don't. So the tunes we do are mostly pretty modern. There is a fair spread from Europe as well as American and British tunes. We have also done some of Mark's tunes. Mark has been commissioned by the Associated Board to write study pieces.
As there are no published charts for many of the tunes we chose Mark transcribes them. His attention to detail is admirable. As he often points out the same tune can be written in different rhythmic combinations.
